Empty Talk on Liberalism and the Dilemma
—Why Hu Shi's "Ping Society" Accomplished Nothing

Abstract: Between 1929 and 1930, with the expansion of the Kuomintang "party rule", a group of liberal intellectuals represented by Hu Shi felt increasing oppression from the newly established Nanjing government in terms of speech and ideological control, they were particularly worried that they might "lose their voice" because of the oppression. Therefore, following the example of the Fabian Society in Britain, they organized the Ping Society to comment on current political affairs in Shanghai. Focusing on "Chinese issues" as the general theme, they had discussions and made political remarks for one and a half years, opposing the Kuomintang "party rule" and advocating technocracy in an attempt to do something in politics. But the Kuomintang party rule system and the chaotic political situation could not allow these intellectual elite's candid advice, and also due to their own disregard of political alienation, they failed to come up with effective solutions despite of their enthusiasm in talking about politics and thus accomplished nothing in politics.
